If you are new to hair systems, learning how to apply hair system glue properly can feel far more complicated than it actually is. Most attachment problems are not caused by the adhesive itself. They usually come down to scalp preparation, application technique, or rushing the process.
A clean, properly applied bond should feel comfortable, look natural at the hairline, and stay stable throughout daily wear.
I’m Matthew, Education & Product Specialist at Chapter VI. Over the years, I have worked with wearers using everything from lace fronts to full skin systems, and the same pattern comes up repeatedly. Small improvements in preparation and application usually make a bigger difference than switching adhesive completely.
Here is how to apply hair system glue properly for a cleaner hold and easier long-term maintenance.
Proper Scalp Preparation Matters More Than Most People Think
Before applying any adhesive, the scalp needs to be completely clean and dry.
That means removing Oil and Sweat, Old adhesive residue, Skincare products and Product. build up. If old residue is left behind, even strong adhesives can struggle to bond consistently.
Products such as C22 Solvent Remover help break down leftover glue or tape safely before reapplication. Once the scalp is clean, many wearers also apply Walker Scalp Protector to: Improve hold consistency, reduce irritation and help manage oily skin by creating a barrier between the scalp and adhesives.
This step is often overlooked, but it can make a noticeable difference to both hold performance and comfort.
Choosing the Right Hair System Glue
Not every adhesive is designed for the same type of wearer.
Some glues prioritise stronger, Extended hold, while others concentrate on quicker and easier clean up. There really is a glue for everyone!
GHOSTBOND XL is one of the most widely used options worldwide because it balances strong hold with a clean, natural finish. For wearers needing more aggressive hold performance, especially in hotter conditions or for active lifestyles, Walker Ultra Hold Adhesive is often what we reach for.
The right adhesive usually depends on:
- Scalp oil levels
- Climate
- Activity level
- Maintainence routine
- Desired hold duration
If your current bond regularly breaks down early, it is often a scalp compatibility issue rather than simply needing a “stronger” glue.
Apply Thin Layers, Not Thick Ones
This is probably the most common mistake I see.
Applying more glue does not usually create a better bond. In many cases, it does the opposite.
Instead apply thin, even layers and allow each layer to dry properly, making sure to avoid heavy build up around the hairline. For most wearers 1-3 coats is enough, but you can go as far as four if you need a little extra support!
Each layer should dry clear or tacky before adding the next and thinner layers cure more evenly, so go lightly with your application. We use the Reusable Silicone Applicator every single time!
A cleaner application generally creates stronger hold with flatter attachment and a more natural looking hairline with easier clean up.
Heavy application often leads to visible residue and weaker curing underneath the surface.
Wait for the Adhesive to Become Tacky
One of the easiest ways to ruin a fresh bond is attaching the system too early.
Most hair system glues need time to become Tacky, Semi-dry or transparent before the system is attached.
If you attach too soon, the system may slide during positioning, lift earlier or cure unevenly, which leads to your bond developing weaker hold areas- not ideal.
Drying times vary depending on humidity, room temperature, scalp condition and the adhesive itself.
Always follow the manufacturer guidance for your chosen product!
Position the Hair System Carefully
Once the adhesive reaches the correct stage, position the system carefully starting from the front hairline and working backwards gradually.
Take your time here as good positioning helps avoid wrinkles, uneven tension, trapped air and lifting edges.
The front hairline matters most visually, so slower and more controlled placement usually gives a much cleaner result. A secret favourite to help this is Walker's Just Rite Positioning Spray to give you a little extra time to line everything up before the glue gets a chance to stick properly.
Allow the Bond Time to Cure Properly
Fresh adhesive bonds continue curing after the system is attached.
For the first 24–48 hours, try to avoid heavy sweating from gym sessions, excessive heat or long showers- basically skip anything hot and humid for a day or two.
This allows the adhesive to settle fully and improves your hold time, water resistance and th long term stability of your bond.
If you're wearing lace, you can also use a melt band briefly after attachment to improve compression around the hairline, and some of our clients wear a hat or sweatband to the gym to keep everything in place every time!
Common Hair System Glue Mistakes
- Using Too Much Glue
- Heavy layers often create messy clean-up and inconsistent curing.
- Skipping Scalp Preparation
- Oil and residue weaken even strong adhesives.
- Attaching Too Early
- Most glues need time to become tacky before fitting.
- Ignoring Maintenance
- Regular cleaning helps maintain both hold quality and scalp comfort.
Learning how to apply hair system glue properly is less about finding a miracle adhesive and more about building a consistent routine that suits your scalp and lifestyle.
Products like GHOSTBOND XL, Walker Ultra Hold Adhesive, Walker Scalp Protector and C22 Solvent Remover can all help improve long-term wear experience when used correctly.
