I'm Matthew, the Educator here at Chapter VI, and the question I get asked most often by salons and customers is 'does Glue hold better than Tape?", but honestly there's right or wrong answer to this question. In this blog, I'll try my best to help you decide for yourself!
Choosing between tape and liquid adhesive is one of the most common questions for hair system wearers. Both options can provide strong hold and natural-looking results, but the right choice often depends on your lifestyle, scalp type and maintenance preferences.
Some wearers prefer the convenience of tape, while others choose liquid adhesive for maximum hold and a seamless hairline appearance.

What Is Hair System Tape?
Hair system tape is a double-sided adhesive designed to securely attach wigs, toupees and hair systems to the scalp.
Popular products like Walker No Shine Tape Lace Front Tape (my favourite) and Ultra Hold Tape are use in salons worldwide (and by wearers) because they offer fast application, easy removal and reliable hold, while also being easier, in most cases, to clean up during maintenance.
If you're a wearer who wants to perform regular maintenance or get quicker clean-up, tape might be for you, especially if you're newer to hair systems.
Modern tapes are also available in different hold strengths and finishes depending on your needs, so there's no need to sacrifice wear time for convenience.
What Is Liquid Adhesive?
Liquid adhesive, often referred to as hair system glue, is applied directly to the scalp and system before attaching the system. For lace pieces, skip applying to the system and go straight for the scalp, carefully laying your lace down into place.
GHOSTBOND XL is quite possibly the biggest selling glue in the market, offering water resistance alongside oil and heat resistance, its a firm favourite among many of our customers and salon partners, though for me, as a hairdresser, Supreme is my personal Go-To- it's got all the good things about XL along with a Mattifying pigment to help it stay invisible underneath lace fronts.
Glues are very commonly recommended for lace systems because they can create a flatter, more invisible appearance around the front hairline, and one I see talked about a lot is Ultra Hold. While its not a go to of mine for lace (I find it a bit rough on the delicate hairlines) we do use it a lot on our more active hair system clients!
Which Offers Stronger Hold?
Both tape and liquid adhesive can provide excellent hold when applied correctly.
Generally liquid adhesives are often preferred for maximum hold and tape offers reliable hold with easier maintenance.
For active lifestyles, gym use or humid conditions, extra strong liquid adhesives like Ultra Hold are commonly chosen because of their durability, though they are difficult to clean up, making your refit take a little longer.
However, many modern tapes also provide impressive long-term hold and comfort.
Which Is Easier to Apply?
Tape is usually considered more beginner-friendly as it allows for quicker fitting, less drying time and cleaner handling. We also find sending our clients home with a little pack of their specific tape for any emergencies helps really settle any nerves for people who are new to their hair replacement journey!
Liquid adhesive requires more precision, particularly around the front hairline where thin layers and drying stages are important.
Many new wearers start with tape before later experimenting with liquid adhesives.
Which Looks More Natural?
For fully exposed hairlines, liquid adhesive is often preferred because it can create a very flat and seamless finish. This is especially important for lace front systems, brushed-back hairstyles or visible hairlines.
Tape can still look extremely natural, particularly when using low-shine products like Walker Lace Front Tape designed specifically for lace systems.
Tape vs Glue for Sensitive Scalps
Scalp sensitivity can play a major role when choosing an adhesive.
Some wearers find tape gentler and easier on the skin, while others prefer specialist liquid adhesives formulated for sensitive scalps.
Using products such as Walker Scalp Protector before application can help reduce irritation and improve comfort wile helping protect sensitive skin and improve adhesive consistency.
Proper scalp cleansing and safe adhesive removal are also important regardless of the attachment method used, but my general sensitive skin recommendation for tape and glue is Sensi Tak Select for tapes and anything from the GHOSTBOND range for glues!
Which Is Easier to Remove?
Tape is often quicker and simpler to remove during maintenance.
Liquid adhesives may require additional remover products and longer clean-up time and then a more detailed residue removal afterwards.
Products like C22 Solvent Remover help safely break down both glue and tape residue without damaging the scalp or hair system base.
Can You Use Tape and Glue Together?
Yes! Many experienced wearers combine both methods.
A common technique is tape around the sides and back and liquid adhesive along the front hairline, though in my experience, if one of them is about to fail anyway, its probably time for a refit!
