Short answer: Never peel hair system tape off dry. Saturate the edge with an adhesive remover such as C-22 Solvent, wait at least a minute, then lift the system slowly, adding more remover as you go. Clean the scalp and the base afterwards so the next tape grips.
Tape is quicker to remove than glue, but rushing it is how lace tears and skin gets sore. Here's the routine we teach.
What you'll need
- A tape remover: C-22 Solvent (fast and oil-based), Walker Signature Remover (a gentler option) or S3 Sensitive Skin Solvent
- For delicate lace: Lace Release
- Bond Breaker Shampoo
- Paper towel or a soft cloth, plus nitrile gloves
How to remove hair system tape: step by step
- Find a loose edge. Start at the back or the side, not the hairline.
- Apply remover generously. Spray or dab it onto the tape where the base meets the skin. On lace, you can apply Lace Release through the lace towards the scalp.
- Wait at least a minute. Walker advises leaving its remover for at least a minute so it can break the tape down. This is the step people skip.
- Lift slowly. Fold the system back gently, working section by section. If you feel resistance, stop, add more remover and wait again.
- Clean the scalp. Wipe away softened tape and residue with paper towel and more remover. Then wash with soap and water or Bond Breaker Shampoo to lift the oily remover off your skin.
- Clean the base. Peel off the old tape pieces and wipe the residue away with remover. For heavy build-up, a solvent soak (step 7) is quicker.
- Soak if needed. Walker suggests soaking the system base-side up in a bowl of Walker Solvent or C-22 for 5–30 minutes. Wear gloves and work the residue off while it's submerged. Then shampoo, rinse and let it dry fully.

Removing Walker Ultra Hold tape
Ultra Hold is one of Walker's tackiest tapes, and Walker lists its residue as high. So give it longer. Walker recommends C-22 Solvent or Walker Signature Remover. Saturate, wait at least a minute, then lift slowly, reapplying as you go. Expect a little more time on the clean-up than with low-residue tapes such as Sensi-Tak Select.
Common mistakes
- Pulling dry tape. It can stretch or rip the base, especially lace.
- Rushing the soak. Let the remover work; don't scrape.
- Leaving remover on the scalp. Oil-based removers leave a film that stops the next tape sticking. Always wash it off.
- Using a soaking remover on your skin. Walker designed Rapid Release mainly for solvent soaks and says it's stronger than it's comfortable using on skin. Keep it for the system.

FAQ
What is the best remover for hair system tape?
For most tapes, C-22 Solvent is Walker's most popular remover and works quickly. If your skin is sensitive, try Walker Signature Remover or S3 Sensitive Skin Solvent, and patch test first.
Can I remove hair system tape without remover?
We don't recommend it. Walker warns that removing tape without a solvent can rip or tear the base. Warm water alone won't break the adhesive down properly.
How do I get tape residue off my scalp?
Wipe it with remover and paper towel until the skin feels smooth, then wash with Bond Breaker Shampoo so no oily film is left before your next fit.
How long should I soak my hair system?
Walker gives 5–30 minutes in Walker Solvent or C-22, depending on the system and how much residue there is. Check delicate lace regularly.
